OVERVIEW: The Tp 272 is a heavyweight, submarine-launched, anti-ship torpedo developed by Sweden as part of its post-war effort. It entered service with Royal Swedish Navy submarines during the early 1960s.

DETAILS: “Tp” stands for Torped in Swedish nomenclature. The Tp 272 succeeded the Tp 271 and was introduced after 1960 to equip Swedish submarines with anti-ship capability using Sweden’s domestically developed High-Test Peroxide (HTP) propulsion system derived from the UK’s Mark 12 Fancy design. It retains a 533 mm diameter and features wire guidance with controlled homing targeting surface vessels. The torpedo uses the HTP-driven piston engine at seawater-cooled exhaust, offering speeds of approximately 50 kn over 20 km and carrying a 300 kg warhead. It was compatible with Type 611 and later HSwMS Halland-class destroyers and submarines.

FUNCTION: Launched from 533 mm submarine tubes, the Tp 272 travels guided via wire and uses active homing during the terminal phase to strike enemy surface ships. Its HTP propulsion ensures high speed and wakelessness ideal for stealthy attacks.
